Abstract

Background: Comprehensive midwifery care is a continuous healthcare approach
provided by midwives throughout pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period,
newborn care, and family planning. This Continuity of Care (CoC) model aims to
deliver integrated maternal and neonatal healthcare services while preventing
complications during pregnancy, labor, the postpartum period, newborn care, and
family planning. This study aimed to provide comprehensive midwifery care for
Mrs. S throughout the continuum of maternal and newborn care.
Methods: This study employed a case study design using a continuity of
midwifery care approach. Midwifery care was documented continuously using the
Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) framework.
Results: Mrs. S (G5P4A0), aged 32 years, received comprehensive midwifery
care through four antenatal care visits. During pregnancy, her primary complaint
was frequent urination, which was appropriately managed. She experienced a
spontaneous vaginal delivery at 39 weeks of gestation. All stages of labor (Stages
I–IV) progressed normally without perineal laceration. A male infant was
delivered with an immediate cry, weighing 2,700 g and measuring 50 cm in
length, with an APGAR score of 9/10. The newborn received comprehensive
essential neonatal care, including early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF),
ophthalmic prophylaxis, vitamin K injection, hepatitis B birth-dose (HB-0)
immunization, and umbilical cord separation on the fifth day of life. The
postpartum period progressed normally without complications. Following family
planning counselling, Mrs. S agreed to become a three-month injectable
contraceptive acceptor.
Conclusion: Continuity of Care supported the successful provision of
comprehensive midwifery care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum
period, newborn care, and family planning. Continuous implementation of this
approach may contribute to the early detection and prevention of maternal and
neonatal complications while improving the quality of maternal and newborn
healthcare services.
