Abstract
ABSTRACT
The biggest causes of maternal death based on data in 2013 were bleeding (30.3%),
hypertension in pregnancy (27.1%), infection (7.3%). Problems related to high MMR based on
analysis from the Directorate of Maternal Health in 2010 are closely related to health personnel
and their facilities. (Indonesia Health Profile, 2016). Midwives have an important and strategic
role to reduce MMR and IMR. One of the areas of competence that a midwife must have is to be
able to detect and identify pregnant women early with the potential to experience hypertension
during pregnancy (pregnancy induced hypertension) including preeclampsia. In addition to
detecting and identifying hypertension in pregnancy, midwives also play a role in the early
management of emergencies caused by hypertension in pregnancy such as preeclampsia and
eclampsia. (Kepmenkes, 2007). The aim of this study was to determine the differences in the level
of knowledge and skills of midwives in the early management of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy.
This type of research is pre-experimental, namely one-group pretest and post test design. The
population in this study were 45 midwives in Sipoholon District. Sampling using purposive
sampling technique, namely midwives who work in the area of the Puskesmas Sipoholon District
who meet the inclusion criteria totaling 28 people, then all respondents are given training in
early handling of preeclampsia in pregnant women then measured differences in the level of
knowledge and skills of these midwives before and after the training. The measuring instruments
used in this study were questionnaires and checklists. Bivariable analysis to compare the
average score of knowledge before and after training using the T-test statistical test and to
compare the difference in the average score of education skills before and after training using
the Wilcoxon test statistic. The results showed that there were significant differences in the
knowledge and skills of midwives before and after training (p <0.05). The results of the T-test
analysis showed a positive and strong correlation between the knowledge and skills of the pretest
and posttest (0.642; p <0.001). It is hoped that midwives will always update knowledge and,
among other things, the early handling of pre-eclampsia so that early anticipation of eclampsia
can be done.
