Abstract
Background: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global
prevalence of anemia among pregnant women ranges from 35% to 41.8%,
indicating that approximately one in three pregnant women worldwide is affected.
Around 40% of maternal deaths are associated with anemia during pregnancy.
Maternal anemia is a common health problem that may lead to serious maternal
and fetal complications if left untreated. In this case, Mrs. I was diagnosed with
mild anemia during the third trimester, with a hemoglobin level of 9.8 g/dL.
Comprehensive Continuity of Care midwifery services are required from
pregnancy through family planning to prevent further complications.
Methods: This case study employed a midwifery management approach with
documentation based on the Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP)
framework.
Results: Mrs. I (G2P1A0) attended four antenatal care visits. At the first visit
(33–34 weeks of gestation), her hemoglobin level was 9.8 g/dL, which increased
to 11.5 g/dL by 39–40 weeks of gestation following appropriate management. She
experienced a normal vaginal delivery with a spontaneous second-degree perineal
laceration. Three postpartum visits identified no complications. The newborn
weighed 3,500 g, measured 49 cm in length, was exclusively breastfed, and
demonstrated appropriate weight gain within 23 days after birth. The mother
planned to use a three-month injectable contraceptive.
Conclusion: Continuity of Care midwifery services had a positive impact on
maternal and neonatal health. Mothers should be encouraged to maintain a
balanced nutritious diet, take iron supplements regularly, and attend routine health
check-ups to promote optimal maternal and child health.
