Background: Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by the
bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which affects the main airways and bronchi.
Based on an initial survey conducted on February 10, 2025, at Dr. Ferdinand
LumbanTobing Hospital, the number of pulmonary tuberculosis cases recorded was 74 in
2020. In 2021, the number of cases decreased to 65. In 2022, cases significantly increased
to 203. 2023 showed 188 cases. For 2024, the number of cases recorded rose to 220. In
January 2025, there were 28 cases.
Objective: To describe the application of mint leaf aromatherapy for ineffective
breathing patterns in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
Research Methods: This was a Qualitative research study using a case study approach
with 2 respondents experiencing pulmonary tuberculosis with ineffective breathing
patterns. The study was conducted at Dr. Ferdinand LumbanTobing General Hospital,
Sibolga City, in 2025. Data collection involved direct observation (observing patient
responses to mint leaf aromatherapy, recording oxygen saturation values, and directly
assessing increases or decreases in saturation), medical records, daily notes, and
interviews.
Results: The case study showed that for client 1, on day 1 after applying mint leaf
aromatherapy, the respiratory rate was 20x/minute with a dyspnea degree of not
breathless (0), and on the seventh day, the respiratory rate decreased to 19x/minute. For
client 2, after applying mint leaf aromatherapy, the respiratory rate was 20x/minute with a
dyspnea degree of not breathless (0) on day 1, and on the seventh day, the respiratory rate
decreased to 17x/minute.
Conclusion: Ineffective breathing patterns in pulmonary tuberculosis patients can be
partially resolved with the application of mint leaf aromatherapy conducted for 7 days.
Recommendations: For the research subjects, it is hoped that clients can perform mint
leaf aromatherapy independently. For the research site, it is expected to add guidelines for
developing practice services to address ineffective breathing patterns in pulmonary
tuberculosis patients. For the institution, the findings can be used as reference material for
student education.
